Wang Shu

Wang Shu is a Chinese architect, born in 1963 in Urumqi, Xinjiang, based in Hangzhou, who serves as dean of the School of Architecture at the China Academy of Art and co founded Amateur Architecture Studio with his wife and collaborator, Lu Wenyu. His work creates contemporary structures from traditional materials and recycled components, honoring cultural heritage and the identity of a place. Notable works include the Ningbo Museum of 2008, the Library of Wenzheng College at Soochow University of 2000, the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art of 2007, and the Ningbo Museum of Art of 2005. In 2012 he became the first Chinese citizen to receive the Pritzker Prize, and the second architect of Chinese descent after I.M. Pei; he also received France's Academy of Architecture Gold Medal in 2011 and shared the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2007.
