William Blake

William Blake was an English poet, painter and printmaker who lived from 1757 to 1827, largely unrecognized during his life but who became a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age. He lived in London his entire life, apart from three years in Felpham, and produced a diverse and symbolically rich collection of works that embraced the imagination as what he called the body of God, or human existence itself. Though considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, he came to be highly regarded by later critics and readers for his expressiveness and creativity and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His wife, Catherine Boucher, worked as a printmaker and colourist on many of his books and was, in the words of one literary scholar, an artist and printer in her own right.
