French Composers

Composers of France, whose refined harmony, songs, piano music and sacred works, from the late nineteenth century into the twentieth, set the French school apart from the German and Italian traditions. The group includes the composer of the Requiem and Pavane, known for his refined songs and chamber music, and the composer of the Gymnopedies, who wrote spare, quiet piano pieces that influenced later composers in France.
