Camille Saint-Saens

Composers

Charles-Camille Saint-Saens was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era who lived from 1835 to 1921. His best-known works include Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, the Second Piano Concerto, the First Cello Concerto, Danse macabre, the opera Samson and Delilah, the Third Violin Concerto, the Third Organ Symphony and The Carnival of the Animals. A musical prodigy who made his concert debut at age ten, he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri and then at La Madeleine in Paris, before becoming a successful freelance pianist and composer in demand across Europe and the Americas. He held only one teaching post, at the Ecole Niedermeyer in Paris, where his students included Gabriel Faure.
