Modest Mussorgsky

Composers

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was a Russian composer who lived from 1839 to 1881 and belonged to the group of composers known as The Five. He was an innovator of Russian music in the Romantic period who strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of established Western musical conventions. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, folklore and other national themes, including the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. For many years his works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers, and many of his most important compositions have only posthumously come into their own in their original forms.
