William Morris (1834 to 1896) was an English textile and wallpaper designer, poet, writer and socialist activist, and the central figure behind the British Arts and Crafts movement. Through his design firm Morris and Co. he revived hand-craft methods of production against the tide of industrial manufacturing, founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and, later in life, became an active socialist organizer.
