Arts and Crafts was a British and American design movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that aimed to improve the quality of everyday design and make good design available to the widest possible audience. It was initiated by William Morris, who founded the design firm Morris and Co. in 1861 out of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, drawing its underlying philosophy from the writer John Ruskin, in reaction to the mechanization of the Industrial Revolution.
