Playwrights and poets of the European avant-garde of the early and mid twentieth century, who broke with the realism of the nineteenth century stage in the name of Dada, epic theatre or the poetry of the Generation of 27. Their plays use song, chance, shock and distancing, and they changed how later dramatists in Europe and America thought about the stage. The group includes the Romanian and French poet and Dada founder who staged scandalous evenings in Zurich and Paris, the German author of the Threepenny Opera and Mother Courage, and the Spanish poet and dramatist of Blood Wedding.
