Mary and Eve

Mary and Eve is a 2005 drawing in crayon and pencil by Sister Grace Remington, a Cistercian nun at Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey near Dubuque, Iowa. It shows the Virgin Mary, pregnant with Jesus, gently consoling a downcast Eve, who holds an apple with a serpent coiled around her legs, while the foot of Mary rests on the head of the serpent, illustrating the theological idea of Mary as a New Eve who reverses the sin of Eve through the incarnation of Christ. The image has become a popular devotional picture during Advent and has inspired other works, including the song Mary Consoles Eve by Sandra McCracken and Rain for Roots.
