Amor Vincit Omnia (Caravaggio)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Amor Vincit Omnia, Latin for Love Conquers All, is a painting by the Italian Baroque artist Caravaggio, made in 1601 to 1602. Also known by titles such as Amor Victorious and Victorious Cupid, it depicts the Roman god of love as a grinning youth standing amid scattered symbols of human achievement, including armor, a laurel wreath, musical instruments and drafting tools, suggesting that love overpowers war, learning and glory alike. The painting was commissioned by the Roman nobleman and art patron Vincenzo Giustiniani and is considered one of Caravaggio most provocative treatments of a classical theme.
