Greco-Roman Mythology

Paintings depicting a story, deity or figure from Greek or Roman mythology: the Olympian gods, the heroes of the Trojan War and other epic cycles, and the nymphs, satyrs and lesser figures of the classical pantheon. This group gathers the single most common secular subject tradition in Western history painting, from the Renaissance recovery of classical subject matter through its continued use by academic and modern painters, and excludes a historical event from the ancient Greek or Roman world with no mythological content, which belongs under Historical and Political Events instead.
