Oedipus and the Sphinx is an 1864 oil on canvas painting by the French artist Gustave Moreau, first shown at the Paris Salon of 1864, where it was an immediate success, and now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It offers a fresh treatment of the long-established subject of Oedipus's encounter with the Sphinx on the road outside Thebes, the meeting described in Sophocles's play Oedipus Rex.
