Allegory of Divine Providence and Barberini Power

The Allegory of Divine Providence and Barberini Power is a fresco by the Italian Baroque painter Pietro da Cortona, covering the ceiling of the grand salon of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Begun in 1633, it was nearly finished within three years, then extensively reworked to completion in 1639 after Cortona's return from Venice. The Palazzo had been the home of the Barberini family since the 1620s, headed by Maffeo Barberini, by then Pope Urban VIII, who had launched an extensive program of refurbishing the city with art and architecture.
