Pietro da Cortona (1596/1597-1669) was an Italian Baroque painter and architect, counted alongside Bernini and Borromini as one of the key figures in the rise of Roman Baroque architecture. He excelled as a designer of interior decoration and is best known for his frescoed ceilings, particularly the vault of the main salon of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, along with extensive decorative schemes he carried out for the Medici family in Florence.
