Minerva Protecting Peace from Mars

Minerva Protecting Peace from Mars, also known as Peace and War, is an oil on canvas painting made between 1629 and 1630 by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens during a diplomatic mission to England. It shows the goddess Minerva shielding the nude figure of Pax, or Peace, from the god of war Mars, a mythological allegory composed as a plea for peace between England and Spain at a time when Rubens himself was working to negotiate it. The painting measures about 203.5 by 298 centimetres and is held at the National Gallery in London.
