The Battle of the Milvian Bridge (Giulio Romano)

The Battle of the Milvian Bridge is a fresco painted between 1520 and 1524 by Giulio Romano, working from a design by Raphael and completed with the help of workshop assistants after the death of Raphael, in the Sala di Costantino of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. It depicts the battle fought on 28 October 312 between the Roman emperors Constantine I and Maxentius, and the tradition that Constantine, before the battle, saw a cross in the sky and was told he would win if he fought under its sign, a promise fulfilled by his victory and credited with turning him toward Christianity.
