Paintings depicting a specific historical or political event: a battle, a coronation, a revolution, an assassination, a treaty or a moment of civic or social history, whether ancient, early modern or contemporary, including murals commemorating or protesting a historical or political subject. This group is the largest secular category in this subcategory and gathers real, datable human events rather than myth, scripture or personification, distinguishing an ancient historical scene such as a Roman gladiatorial contest from a mythological subject set in the same era, which belongs under Greco-Roman Mythology instead.
