The Coronation of Charlemagne

A fresco designed by the workshop of Raphael, painted around 1516 to 1517, most likely by Gianfrancesco Penni, in the Stanza dell'Incendio of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. It depicts Pope Leo III crowning Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day in the year 800, with a page shown holding aside the crown Charlemagne had just worn as king. Art historians read the fresco's figures as carrying contemporary political meaning for the papacy of Leo X, alluding to the 1515 Concordat of Bologna between France and the Holy See rather than only to the historical coronation itself.
