The Vision of the Cross

The Vision of the Cross is a fresco in the Sala di Costantino of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, designed by Raphael before his death in 1520 and completed between 1520 and 1524 by his assistants Gianfrancesco Penni, Giulio Romano and Raffaellino del Colle. It depicts the emperor Constantine I experiencing a vision of a cross in the sky before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in the year 312, an event tradition credits with inspiring the motto later rendered as In hoc signo vinces, in this sign you shall conquer. Painted in a crowded Mannerist style, the scene fills the sky with figures, a dragon and symbolic imagery around the emperor and his army.
