Tragic Prelude

Tragic Prelude is a mural by the American artist John Steuart Curry, painted between 1937 and 1942 in oil and egg tempera for the Kansas State Capitol building in Topeka, Kansas. It depicts the abolitionist John Brown as its central figure, standing between fighting Union and Confederate soldiers with a Bible in one hand and a rifle in the other, flanked by emigrants with covered wagons and by a tornado and prairie fire. The mural measures 11 feet 4 inches tall and 31 feet long and is located on the east side of the Capitol's second floor rotunda.
