Paolo and Francesca da Rimini is a watercolour triptych painted in 1855 by the British artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, now in Tate Britain in London. It draws on Canto V of Dante's Inferno, illustrating the story of the adulterous lovers Paolo Malatesta and his sister in law Francesca da Rimini. The outer two panels each show the lovers together, while the central panel shows Dante himself accompanied by the Roman poet Virgil, his guide through Hell in the poem. Rossetti had sketched the subject for years beforehand but completed the watercolour in a single week, and the critic John Ruskin bought it for thirty five guineas.
