Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English poet, illustrator and painter who lived from 1828 to 1882, and who founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 together with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His painting was characterized by sensuality and medieval revivalism, and from about 1860 his style became dense and richly colored, drawing on later Italian Renaissance painting and typically showing a single female figure set against a luxuriant background of vegetation. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his own pictures, and his personal life was closely bound up with his relationships with the models who sat for these paintings, including Elizabeth Siddal, whom he married.
