Romanticism and Neoclassicism Painters

Painters working in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century movements of Neoclassicism, which revived classical restraint and moral seriousness as a reaction against Rococo excess, and Romanticism, which emphasized emotion, imagination, the sublime in nature and national or historical subject matter, including closely related currents such as the Nazarene movement and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's own reaction against academic convention. This group gathers painters explicitly identified with either movement or its immediate offshoots, and excludes the later nineteenth century Realist painters who reacted against Romantic idealization in favor of everyday, unidealized subject matter, gathered instead under Realist Painters.
