John William Waterhouse

Painters

John William Waterhouse was an English painter, baptised on 6 April 1849 and dying on 10 February 1917, known for working first in the Academic style and then embracing the style and subject matter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His paintings are known for their depictions of women from ancient Greek mythology, Arthurian legend and the works of William Shakespeare, and a high proportion depict a single young and beautiful woman in a historical costume and setting. Born in Rome to English parents who were both painters, he later moved to London, where he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Art Schools and soon began exhibiting at their annual summer exhibitions.
