John Everett Millais

Painters

John Everett Millais was an English painter and illustrator who lived from 1829 to 1896, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, established at his family home in London in 1848. He was a child prodigy who at age eleven became the youngest student admitted to the Royal Academy Schools, and his painting Christ in the House of His Parents caused controversy for its unidealized depiction of the Holy Family. His later works, painted in a more commercially successful realist style after he moved away from Pre-Raphaelite methods in the mid-1850s, made him one of the wealthiest artists of his day.
