Christ on the Mount of Olives was an oil painting of about 1604 to 1606 by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, depicting the Gospel of Matthew's account of Jesus praying on the Mount of Olives while the apostles Peter, John and James sleep nearby, with the approach of Judas and the arresting soldiers suggested through Christ's own gesture. The painting, measuring 154 by 222 centimeters, was part of a series of religious works Caravaggio produced for Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani, in whose collection inventory it is well documented, and scholars have noted that the model used for Saint Peter recurs in Caravaggio's contemporary paintings of Saint Jerome. The painting passed eventually to Berlin's Kaiser Friedrich Museum, where it was destroyed in 1945, and it survives today only through historical photographs and later reproductions.
