Head of Christ (Rembrandt)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Head of Christ (Rembrandt) refers to a group of closely related oil on panel paintings of the head of Christ produced in Rembrandt van Rijn's studio during the 1640s and into the 1650s, now held by museums and private collections internationally. The best documented version, dated to 1648 and measuring about 25 by 21.7 centimeters, shows Christ in three-quarter profile with long dark curls, a short full beard and a reddish-brown cloak; earlier scholarship held that Rembrandt and his pupils worked from a Jewish model for the series, though the point remains contested. This Berlin panel is the one version the Rembrandt Research Project has authenticated as by Rembrandt's own hand; it survived the Second World War in storage, was stolen in 1959 and recovered in 1961, and was shown in the 2011 exhibition Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus. It is held by the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
