Lamentation (The Mourning of Christ)

Lamentation, also known as The Mourning of Christ, is a fresco painted around 1305 by the Italian artist Giotto di Bondone as part of his cycle depicting the life of Christ on the interior walls of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy. The scene shows the dead body of Christ being mourned by the Virgin Mary, Saint John, Mary Magdalene and other grieving figures beneath a barren, sloping hillside, with a flock of mourning angels swirling in the sky above. Regarded as one of the emotional high points of the Scrovegni Chapel cycle, the fresco is celebrated for the naturalism and psychological intensity Giotto brought to each figure grief, a marked departure from the more stylized Byzantine painting that preceded him.
