Giotto di Bondone, known mononymously as Giotto (c. 1267 to 1337), was an Italian painter and architect from Florence, active during the Late Middle Ages in the Gothic and Proto-Renaissance period. His contemporary, the banker and chronicler Giovanni Villani, called him the most sovereign master of painting of his time, praising his ability to draw figures and their postures according to nature. The later writer Giorgio Vasari described Giotto as making a decisive break from the prevailing Byzantine style, crediting him with introducing accurate drawing from life after it had been neglected for more than two hundred years.
