Renaissance Painters

Painters active during the European Renaissance, roughly the fourteenth through the sixteenth century, when artists revived classical ideals of proportion, perspective and naturalism after the medieval period. This group is split into two children, Italian Renaissance and Non-Italian Renaissance, reflecting the two major regional traditions art history treats separately: the Florentine, Venetian and Roman schools that originated the movement, and the parallel Northern, Spanish and other European traditions that developed their own oil-painting techniques and subject matter in the same period. A painter belongs here by working era and stylistic break from medieval convention, not by subject matter; a painter working later in a deliberately revivalist or Neoclassical mode belongs instead under Romanticism and Neoclassicism.
