The work measures about 37 by 56 centimeters and places the Holy Family as small figures within a vast Alpine panorama, in keeping with Bruegel's world landscape tradition. The composition includes a fallen pagan statue, read as a sign of Christ's triumph over paganism, and small salamanders taken as symbols of evil.
