A Young Tiger Playing with Its Mother

A Young Tiger Playing with Its Mother is an oil-on-canvas painting completed by the French Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix in 1830-1831, now in the Louvre in Paris. It depicts a young tiger and its mother at play together against a rocky landscape beneath a cloudy sky. Delacroix exhibited the work at the Paris Salon of 1831, at a point early in his career when he was strongly drawn to depicting exotic and powerful animals. The art historian Lee Johnson has described it as the largest animal painting Delacroix had made up to that time, and it reflects his recurring interest in using animal subjects to express raw emotion and physical power.
