Almond Blossoms

Landscapes and Still Lifes

Almond Blossoms is a group of paintings made in 1888 and 1890 by Vincent van Gogh in Arles and Saint-Remy in southern France, depicting blossoming almond trees. Flowering trees were special to van Gogh, who found joy in painting them and saw them as representing awakening and hope; the works reflect the influence of Impressionism, Divisionism and Japanese woodcuts. One version, Almond Blossom, was made to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, the son of his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo.
