J.M.W. Turner's explicit tribute to Goethe's Theory of Colours, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843, paired with its companion Shade and Darkness, the Evening of the Deluge. A luminous vortex of gold, white and yellow stages Goethe's polarity of warm, plus colours against its companion picture's cool, minus darkness. Both paintings were stolen from a Frankfurt exhibition in 1994 and recovered in 2000 and 2002.
