German Romantic Landscapes

Landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich and other German Romantic painters, in which trees, ruins, abbeys and open fields are painted as settings of mood, silence and the inner life. The group includes the single trees and church ruins of Friedrich, whose pictures of oak, snow and mist became symbols of German Romanticism and are now in the museums of Germany and France. The group is a small one, but its pictures are among the best known of the German Romantic movement.
