Anthony van Dyck

Sir Anthony van Dyck was a Flemish Baroque painter who lived from 1599 to 1641 and became the leading court painter in England after earlier success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy. He trained in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp, and after periods working in Genoa and Flanders he returned to London in 1632 as the main court painter for Charles I. He is best known for his portraits of the aristocracy, especially Charles I and his family, and along with Diego Velazquez he was among the first painters of pre-eminent talent to work mainly as court portraitists, dominating English portrait painting for over 150 years.
