Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, and a leading figure of the Pop Art movement that emerged in the early 1960s. He drew source imagery from comic books, advertisements, and other mass-produced material, enlarging individual panels and recreating them with bold outlines, flat color, and Ben-Day dots, a mechanical printing texture he painstakingly reproduced by hand, in works such as Look Mickey, Whaam!, and Drowning Girl. By treating the visual language of commercial printing as fine art subject matter, Lichtenstein challenged the boundary between high art and popular culture and became one of the most influential and instantly recognizable American artists of the twentieth century.
