John Singer Sargent (1856 to 1925) was an American expatriate artist considered the leading portrait painter of his generation for his evocations of Belle Epoque and Edwardian era luxury. He created roughly nine hundred oil paintings and more than two thousand watercolors, along with countless sketches and charcoal drawings, and his subjects and travels ranged across Venice, the Tyrol, Corfu, Capri, Spain, the Middle East, Montana, Maine and Florida.
