Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born German painter and draftsman whose highly individual body of work, more than ten thousand pieces across painting, drawing, watercolor and etching, drew on Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism without settling into any one of them. He taught color theory and design at the Bauhaus alongside Wassily Kandinsky, and his own paintings combined a childlike simplicity of form with sophisticated compositional theory, often built from geometric shapes, whimsical figures and musical rhythm. Among his best known works are Angelus Novus, The Twittering Machine and Ad Parnassum.
