Modernist Painters

Painters of the many movements that broke decisively with representational, single-viewpoint painting from the early twentieth century onward, including Cubism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, along with narrower movements and individually significant modern painters this group's children do not separately name. This group is split into child groups by named sub-movement, with a residual Other Modernist Painters child gathering modern painters whose work is clearly part of this broader twentieth century break from representational convention but does not fit one of the specifically named movements. It excludes the nineteenth century Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters whose own work directly preceded and fed into these movements, and excludes contemporary painters working today without a specific historical modernist movement affiliation, gathered under Contemporary Painters.
