Gilberto Hernandez Ortega

Gilberto Hernandez Ortega was a Dominican painter, born in Bani on December 21, 1923 and raised in Santo Domingo, who is considered a leading painter of his generation in the Dominican Republic. His work was primarily surrealist, though he also explored expressionism and abstraction, and his figurative paintings featured distorted human forms rendered in dark colors set against vibrant accents. Over several decades he also taught, significantly influencing a generation of Dominican artists. He died in Santo Domingo on October 23, 1979.
