Painters of Non-Western Traditions

Painters working primarily within a non-Western artistic tradition and its own materials, subjects and conventions, including Chinese ink and brush painting, Japanese woodblock and ukiyo-e printmaking, Persian and Mughal miniature painting, Byzantine and Orthodox icon painting, and traditional African, Aboriginal Australian and other indigenous painting practices tied to a specific culture's own visual language rather than the European tradition this atlas's other painter groups chart. This group gathers painters whose primary body of work sits within one of these traditions, including painters who later gained international recognition, and excludes painters from non-Western countries whose own primary training and output sit within a Western or internationally modernist idiom, who belong instead under a Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Realist, Impressionist or Modernist group as their own work fits.
