Albert Namatjira was an Aboriginal Australian artist of the Western Arrernte people who became the first Aboriginal painter to achieve national fame, working in a watercolor landscape style he learned from a visiting European artist and applying it to depictions of the Central Australian outback, especially the MacDonnell Ranges near his home at Hermannsburg. His luminous, technically accomplished watercolors of ghost gums and desert landscapes sold widely to a non-Aboriginal Australian public in the 1940s and 1950s, making him the most commercially successful Australian artist of his era, though he was denied full Australian citizenship rights for most of his career under discriminatory laws of the time. Namatjira's success opened opportunities for later generations of Aboriginal watercolorists working in the same Hermannsburg School style.
