Amalia Rodrigues

Amalia da Piedade Rodrigues was a Portuguese fado singer who lived from 23 July 1920 to 6 October 1999, known as the Queen of Fado for her role in bringing the genre to international audiences over a career spanning 1939 to 1999. Born in Lisbon to a poor family, she became Portugal's best-selling recording artist and performed throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia while also appearing in films. At her death the Portuguese government declared three days of national mourning, and in 2001 she became the first woman interred at the National Pantheon.
