Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso was a Cuban-American singer who lived from 21 October 1925 to 16 July 2003, known as the Queen of Salsa for her contributions to Latin music. She rose to prominence as a vocalist with the group Sonora Matancera, mastering Afro-Cuban styles including guaracha, rumba, son and bolero, and left Cuba after the 1960 revolution to continue her career in Mexico and the United States. Over her career she recorded 37 studio albums, sold more than 30 million records, and won two Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards; in 2024 she became the first Afro-Latina to appear on a United States quarter.
