Etta James

Etta James, born Jamesetta Hawkins, was an American singer and songwriter whose career, beginning in 1954, moved across gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll and soul. She had hits including The Wallflower in 1955, her signature ballad At Last in 1960, and Something's Got a Hold on Me in 1962, performing for years on the Chitlin' Circuit of Black-owned clubs across the American South. After personal struggles including heroin addiction, severe physical abuse and incarceration, she made a late-career comeback with the 1988 album Seven Year Itch.
