Zenzile Miriam Makeba was a South African singer, songwriter, actress and civil rights activist who lived from 4 March 1932 to 9 November 2008, known as Mama Africa. She gained international prominence after appearing in the 1959 anti-apartheid film Come Back, Africa and went on to record across genres including Afropop, jazz and world music, winning a Grammy Award in 1965 for her collaboration with Harry Belafonte. A vocal opponent of apartheid who testified before the United Nations, she had her South African citizenship revoked and lived in exile for decades before returning after apartheid's end in 1990.
