Carlos Gardel, born Charles Romuald Gardes, was a French-born Argentine singer, composer and actor who lived from 11 December 1890 to 24 June 1935, remembered as the most famous tango singer in history. Known for his rich baritone-to-tenor voice, he created the tango-cancion in 1917 with lyricist Alfredo Le Pera and carried the genre across Latin America, Europe and North America, also appearing in several films for Paramount Pictures. He died in an airplane crash in Medellin, Colombia, in 1935, and is still commonly known by the nickname El Zorzal.
