Farid al-Atrash was a Syrian-Egyptian singer, oud player, composer and actor who immigrated to Egypt at the age of nine with his mother and siblings and became one of the most noted figures in twentieth-century Arabic music. Renowned for his virtuosic playing of the oud and for compositions that set traditional Arabic maqam within orchestral arrangement, he starred in numerous Egyptian musical films, several of them alongside his sister, the singer and actress Asmahan.
