Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti was a Nigerian musician and political activist who lived from 15 October 1938 to 2 August 1997. He pioneered Afrobeat, a genre blending West African music with American funk and jazz, and became one of Africa's most influential and outspoken musical voices. In 1970 he established the Kalakuta Republic, a commune he declared independent of the Nigerian state, and used his music as a platform for fierce criticism of the country's military governments, for which he was arrested more than 200 times and imprisoned for 20 months in 1984.
